I'm Diana Lockwood, your blogger and the creator of this website.
This project has been simmering in the back of my mind for a long time, because it combines two of my passions: writing and nature.
Even as a child, I loved picking flowers and drawing pictures and writing stories — and that’s kind of what this undertaking involves, on a slightly more grown-up level.
After studying art and journalism in college, I began working as a copy editor, first in news and then in features, at The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio’s largest newspaper.
At work, I edited stories and wrote headlines; at home, I tended the garden and watched birds.
After my youngest children were born, I left The Dispatch to concentrate on family — and, when the kids (and I) seemed ready, I returned to the newspaper, as a freelance garden columnist.
(My column runs every Sunday in the Home & Garden section; you can find it at

www.dispatch.com.)
Today, my garden, like most gardens in busy families, is a never-ending work in progress.
It’s not picture-perfect and probably never will be — and, to be honest, I have to admit that I like it that way.
Weeds are always threatening to take over, and unfinished projects are always lingering. But there’s never a shortage of exciting things to do or look at.
I’m also incredibly fortunate to live on what’s officially called a “National Scenic River” — Little Darby Creek in Madison County, Ohio.
My family and I live only 20 miles from Columbus, the state capital, but at home we enjoy acres of woodland and a life-filled creek that brings new wonders every day.
I’ll be sharing ideas and experiences — tips on gardening, discoveries in nature, and struggles and successes.
Of course, even gardeners need a break from gardening once in a while, so I reserve the right to digress when inspiration strikes.
